      Google           
      A very large and popular engine that allows you to search the web, groups, images, directories and news. For the majority of searches, the best place to start. Partial Boolean.    
           
      Yahoo            
      The oldest of all the engines and directories. Powered by Google. So why use it? Consider Yahoo anytime you want a human-reviewed web site. Also Yahoo acquired Inktomi, a crawler-based that rivals Google.    
             
        Teoma            
        A crawler-based search engine. It has a smaller index than Google, AllTheWeb and AltaVista. Features subject specific ranking. Suggests terms within results to refine the search. Also points to other pages within results with more links.    
             
        AllTheWeb       
        Over 2 billion fully indexed searchable pages. Advanced search in difficult both worth the effort. Features web, news, images, video, audio, FTP files. Also allows inclusion or exclusion of specific files such as midi, applets, etc.    
             
        Alta Vista        
        Large, but smaller than Google, or AllTheWeb. Full Boolean searching and powerful Searching within results using sort by box in Advanced Search. Gives access to web, images, MP3/Audio, video, directory, news. Advanced Search allows user to turn off/on a great variety of files.    
             
        Lycos    
      Although Lycos uses AllTheWeb’s crawler, there are still reasons why Lycos may be preferred. Fast forward lets you see search results in one side of your screen and the actual pages listed on the other. At the top of the page, Lycos will suggest other searches related to your original topic.

    Library Based Search Tools    
             
        Infomine    
        INFOMINE is a virtual library of Internet resources relevant to faculty, students, and research staff at the university level. It contains useful Internet resources such as databases, electronic journals, electronic books, bulletin boards, mailing lists, online library card catalogs, articles, directories of researchers, and many other types of information.    
             
        Internet Public Library    
        The Internet Public Library (IPL) is a public service organization and learning/teaching environment at the University of Michigan School of Information. Activities include: finding, evaluating, selecting, organizing, describing, and creating information resources; and direct assistance to individuals. Use a learn-by-doing approach to train information professionals and students to work in an increasingly digital environment. Develop technology and best practices for providing library services via the Internet, including digital reference service and collection management.    
             
        Librarians’ Index to the Internet    
      The mission of Librarians' Index to the Internet is to provide a well-organized point of access for reliable, trustworthy, librarian-selected Internet resources, serving California, the nation, and the world. The Librarians' Index to the Internet (lii.org) is a searchable, annotated subject directory of more than 12,000 Internet resources selected and evaluated by librarians for to users of public libraries. lii.org is used by both librarians and the general public as a reliable and efficient guide to Internet resources.

    Directories      
        Directories are web sites gathered into a hierarchical structure, leading from the general topic to the specific. Example: Education>College and Universities.K-12. Yahoo, Google. Lii, Infomine, Academic Info, About.com, the IPL, as well as many others are directories as well as search engines.    
             
        Yahoo Directory    
        Yahoo is by far the oldest and probably the biggest and best subject directory.    
             
        UC Berkeley Internet Resources    
        The Berkeley Digital Library SunSITE builds digital collections and services while providing information and support to digital library developers worldwide. It features collections of hundreds of reference resources about universities and colleges and links to many online reference and full-text resources.    
             
        Academic Info    
        Academic Info is an educational directory which provides Online Degree Programs and test preparation resources via the Internet. This is a large database that offers full online services.    
             
        Government Views on Iraq from The City College of New York    
        The site concentrates on Government documents and information and while the bulk of the resources are from the United States, there are international entries as well.
